The novel begins with the birth of the main character, Saudat, who is born with a unique physical trait - wings. Her parents are shocked and frightened by her appearance and fear that she will be ostracized from their community. However, Saudat's grandmother, who has knowledge of traditional medicine, assures them that her wings are a blessing and not a curse. She predicts that Saudat will grow up to be a powerful and influential woman.
